How does a jobless guy stay happy?

I am a jobless person who has no intention of looking for a job. And yet I am happier today than I have ever been before. I have held jobs that paid very well, but have not been entirely happy, even as I spent as fast as I earned, in the hope that spending may buy me some happiness. So how do I keep myself happy while remaining jobless? Let me share with you a little secret.

If you want to stay happy, you need to have a feeling of self worth, a reason to wake up and leap out of bed every morning. There are many people who have lots more money than I do, and yet they are miserable, mainly because they haven't discovered this self worth. So how do you get this self worth?

In my opinion, there's no better way to get self worth than to do something that gives you a sense of accomplishment. In my case, I wake up every morning to build my website, Penang Travel Tips. Not just building a website, my goal is to build the world's biggest personally written travel website. Now, as that website grows and grows, it gives me a sense of accomplishment. Of course, the fact that My World Travel Guides is getting more and more traffic and making more and more money also help. But the reason it is becoming successful is because of the passion I invest into writing it, the enjoyment I felt as I write page after page of it.

Writing My World Travel Guides is such a monumental undertaking that it has consumed all my time. I don't have time to go out to work anymore. Naturally it helps that I am able to support myself without holding a job.

Happiness is closely linked to self worth. Things that make you feel important and useful usually generates happiness. If you are jobless and miserable, look for opportunities to accomplish things. Give yourself a project, something that you can be proud of, and if your friends and family know about it, they can be proud of you too.

Here's an example. When Julie Powell turned thirty, she felt her life was utterly meaningless. So she decided to give herself a project, which is, to cook every recipe in the famous French cookbook Mastering the Art of French Cooking. She wrote a blog about that, and became so successful that her story was made into the movie, Julie & Julia.

How does a jobless guy stay happy? To be fair, it is important to ensure that you are financially stable. By that, I mean, you don't have to be filthy rich, but at least you don't have to be worrying about paying your bills the whole time. Read my advice for the jobless, penniless and desperate. Once you've gotten your financial affairs in order, look for something great to accomplish. It has to be something huge, something challenging, something worth doing, something that will make you proud. Do it, and you'd stay happy the whole time.

It all began with a website

It was March 2003, and I have just started a new website, in support of my travel hobby. I call it AsiaExplorers, a precursor to a travel club of the same name that I was establishing. Although AsiaExplorers was started for me to amuse myself, it grew until I am able to turn my back on holding a job. I would never have known it, when I started it, that AsiaExplorers will one day be helping me pay my bills.

It could happen to you too. Do you have a passionate interest bottled deep inside you? Do not let your job get in the way. Pursue your interest. I wrote on travel, it's something I love, and it ended up supporting me financially. It could happen to you too. What is your interest, cooking, fishing, cars, gardening, you can write about it and make money from your interest. You could become so successful you would regret not pursuing your interest earlier.

But what about "how to write"? When I started, I did it myself. There was no one to hold my hand. Blogs have not appeared on the scene yet. I did it my way, by simply fulfilling my passion to describe my hobby. And I would recommend that you do the same.

If you're jobless and miserable about it, remember this: we are miserable only if we allow ourselves to be. Often it's because we are overwhelmed with too many issues stressing us out. Once you start looking at your situation positively, and take actions to pursue your passion towards a productive goal, you'd begin to feel better.

One of the biggest thrills for me today is to be able to reach out and help give hope to jobless people. This world is a materialistic place that can stress you out the moment you allow it. You must block out all "noise" and pursue your happiness. Having done it myself, I want to keep the path lit for others to follow.
