How many AdSense units to place on a page?

Do you know that the number of AdSense units you place your your webpage affects how much you can earn from that page? Although Google allows webmasters to place up to three AdSense units on their webpage, I discover quite accidentally that putting the maximum three units on my webpage is not a good idea. My earnings for pages with three ad units are quite low. However, when I boldly remove all the ad units and leave only one, suddenly my earnings increase. This is something that I have discovered to be true for my pages, and I encourage you to test this "theory" on your page. If you find that your AdSense earnings go up when you reduce the number of ad units to only one, then stick to it. Otherwise go back to before.

Where to place that sole AdSense unit on your page? The best place is "above the fold", that is so say, visible on the page as soon as it is loaded, without needing to scroll. The ad unit should also stand alone, without any text wrapped around it. I do not know why, except that I see better earnings in such a position.

But why does my AdSense earning increase when I reduce the number of ad units per page? I believe the best-paying ads appear on the top ad unit. Subsequent ad units will display poorer paying ads. By having more than one ad unit on your page, you are displaying ads that do not pay so well. When you remove these low-paying ads, you are indirectly channelling the readers to click only on the higher paying ads. I am not saying that you are telling them to click on your ads, but rather, you are reducing the possibility that they will click on low-paying ads. Make sense?

Why don't you test out this theory, and I hope you see an increase in your earnings!
