How many websites should I build at one time?

How many websites should I build at one time? Today I am writing to tackle this issue because I happened to come across an "advice" somewhere on You Tube that the way to earn a full time living from the web is to build ten websites which each earn you $10 per day. The You Tube video goes on to recommend that it would be easier to earn $10 per day from each website than to expect to earn $100 per day from one website.

A lot of people who are new to website building is going to watch that video and say, "Well, that makes sense". But when I saw that video, a small alarm bell started ringing inside me. If you are thinking of earning a living from the web, and you are considering the idea of setting up ten websites, hoping to earn $10 per day from each of them, hold your horses! Let me share my own experience with you.

I have over thirty websites to my name. Today a few of my websites have become extremely successful, but the majority haven't taken off. I have tried earning $10 a day from each site, and I find that it is harder than I can possibly imagine. In fact, on hindsight, I would say it is easier to earn $100 per day total from as few websites as possible, than from as many as you want. Why do I say that?

The time taken for a website to establish itself, and get ranked and found by the search engine is the longest. As a result, you will take longer to earn your first $5 per day from that website, than you would your next $5. Similarly, the time you would take to earn your first $10 per day from the website will be longer than for you to earn $20 per day from it. So if you try to build ten websites hoping to bring them to an earning level of $10 per day each, you will soon realise that someone else who simply concentrate on fewer websites will quickly surpass you.

So how many websites should you build? My advice is, one at a time. Put your whole focus on it, so that it brings in your first $5, then your first $10, and so on. When do you stop working on that website to start a new one? When you find that your earning from it has plateaued, or that there is no more new information that you can add into it without repeating yourself. That's when it's time to start a new site. But before you even consider starting a new site, be very, very sure that your existing site is as complete as it gets. Are you absolutely sure there are no grounds you haven't covered? The search engines love huge, extremely detailed websites, as do organic visitors. There's a wow factor to arrival at a site that provides absolutely every detail on a particular niche. That's what you should aim for. Don't waste time building mediocre sites hoping to make $10 per day - there are plenty of such sites out there, yours will hardly get noticed. Also, you will lose your focus. I've been there, done that, and I realise I cannot concentrate or more than a few topics at one time. I am forced to focus on just a few websites - in fact, just one at a time. So that's why I realise I waste more time when I try to have so many websites.

When you decide to build a website, plan to make it the best website in its niche. Do not start the website until you are absolutely certain on the niche you want to cover, and do not stop until you have built that website.
