How to become Happily Jobless
How to become happily jobless? There are many people who become jobless every day, but without the "happily" attached to it. Most people become jobless through circumstance
, while being happily jobless is out of choice
. That choice does not come overnight. It is the fruit of careful planning. It may take years before you reach that goal.
Another way to describe being happily jobless is to "retire early". I prefer to call myself being happily jobless than being retired, as it makes me feel old. But why would anybody who is perfectly healthy and still very much in the productive working age decides not to put himself in the employment market? Well, simply put, because you have the option to do so.
How do you support yourself if you are jobless?
The "problem" with this world is that they cannot get outside the box. To them, the only way to make money, to earn a living, is by holding a job. But I tell you this: holding a job (no matter how perfect) is a terrible, terrible way to spend your life on earth. Just think of the amount of time you forgo in order to earn the pay to survive. It is simply not worth it.
"But there's nothing else that I can do that compares to the salary I make."
And that's why you fail. If you think you won't succeed, you won't. But if you have this passion, this overriding desire that freedom from work is more important and is worth the effort, then you will do everything necessary to free yourself from the job world.
I did not become happily jobless overnight
. It took me many years to find the solution that works for me. In the process of searching, I tried out things that didn't quite work for me - but it does work very well for other people, many of whom are today happily jobless with such vehicles.
But if it is your desire to "follow me", I create this website to help shortcut the journey.
Earning a living without holding a job
Basically there are three main vehicles to earn a living without holding a job.
- Join an MLM
- Start a business
- Start a website (or blog)
Let me tell you straightaway that I am able to live this life because of my websites. However, I have tried all three aforementioned vehicles, and I will go through with you the pros and cons of each.
Joining an MLM
Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) is a great way to earn a living without holding a job. I know of many friends who are doing just that. Before I discovered my present vehicle, I tried MLM. I was very passionate in it. However, I wasn't successful. Having said that, even though I may have failed in MLM, it may work very well for you. That's because we are two different persons, and our character may different significantly.
I was not successful in MLM because I simply do not like talking to people. I do not even like to recommend quality products to my friends, even though I like the products myself. I do not care to be part of a pyramid with uplines and downlines. Although the MLM company says that I am building my own business, I feel like I am actually working for the MLM company without salary, because I have to promote their product against the product of other companies.
Start a business
There was a time when I fully believed that the only way to break out from the job world is to start a business. And starting one with a partner I did. The business is still running, and it's doing quite well. In fact, I can say that I can support myself fully on this business which has grown over the years.
However, if you ask me today, I would not want to repeat what I have done. In other words, I am not keen to start a business today. It is too much trouble. It involve to much risk. It involved too much investment in time and money. And on top of it all, it can grow into a monster that grabs you and won't let you go.
As far as running a business is concerned, I am in an ideal situation, in that I am earning an income from that business, but the day-to-day running of it is done by my partner. I tell you, it's a very stressful thing to run a business. I have no desire to be in his shoes. And unlike many partnerships, I told my partner clearly that my friendship with him is more important than the business itself, and even if he runs the business to the ground, it doesn't matter as long as he prioritize on his own health and well-being. So I just let the business go on auto pilot, and I sit back and earn.
If you are thinking of starting a business, so that you can be happily jobless, you may well be going from the frying pan into the fire. The responsibilities of holding a job and running a business is similar, and probably magnified many times. Never make yourself unhappily wealthy.
Start a website
I have the advantage of having learned to write HTML long before I started my first website. When I started AsiaExplorers back in 2003, I have no clue that it is going to become an income generator. It was created for fun. Only many years later that I realize its potential. From there it spawned many other websites such as Penang Travel Tips
, London Travel Tips, My World Travel Guides and The Flowering Garden
. At last count, I have over seventy different websites, including my personal website, www.timothytye.com
I like earning from websites more than the other two methods. With websites, I earn 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The income is passive, such as in MLM, but I never have to meet people and persuade them to buy anything. I don't have to look after downlines. It is also better than starting a business because the overhead is minimal. I don't need to hire staff, keep inventory and so on.
If you want to earn a living without holding a job, I recommend that you consider having your own website as a possible option. I'm talking about earning from your own website, not making a living by building websites for people (I don't do that, that's not passive income).
But where do you start? If you have absolutely no knowledge about web building, you should consider a program for people to start their online business. I can tell you at once that it is not
cheap. It will cost you $299 per year, but if you follow it closely, you will recover your investment and more. SBI provides a step-by-step build with template and advice, along with a forum, so that you have your hand held as you start your journey into an online business venture. Most people who have used Site Build It are very happy about it, even though occasionally there are people who think that is not worth the money.
An alternative to Site Build It is Bluehost
. Unlike SBI, this is a hosting company. That means it will simply host your website, but you need to learn the ropes yourself. It does have an online chat so that you can seek help over technical issues. However, it doesn't teach you to build your website or how to earn from it. That, you have to do the homework yourself.
Your first step towards becoming happily jobless
In case you haven't noticed, becoming happily jobless doesn't happen overnight. It is certainly not due to circumstances, but rather the result of careful planning. If we have to work hard at all, make sure we are doing it for ourselves.
