How To Write Good Content (For Your Website/Blog)

Today I want to address the question which many people often ask me - how to write good content for your website or blog. As a person who earns a full-time income online from my travel websites, I have written about 10,000 pages of content. (You can visit www.tim-the-traveler.com to view a full list of my travel websites, so that you know I am a real person with real websites.)

If you are a webmaster or blogger, I am sure you have heard a hundred times that you need to have quality content on your site. You also may have heard that you need original content. Today I want to provide some clarity over this matter, so that when you write your next article, you will be clear of the direction you need to take.

Let's start with original content. It means your own words. It doesn't mean writing something that has never been written about before. Every topic under the sun has been covered by someone somewhere. If the topic is popular, for sure it has been covered before. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't approach it.

Taking my own websites as examples, my London Travel Tips and Exploring America websites deal with extremely popular destination which for sure others have written about before. Then why do I bother writing them? Because I am presenting it in my own ways, using my own approach. And I know the resulting websites will be useful to people who are traveling to London and America. That is what being original is about.

Being original doesn't mean you cannot do your research. In order to write my website, I do refer to lots of books, to Wikipedia, and to other websites. But I don't copy their content word for word. After I got the information, I write it in my own words. That way, I preserve the originality of my content.

Next let's discuss quality content. To get quality to your content, you need to know your readers. Why do they visit your website? Few people, if any, have the time to pay your site a visit simply to enjoy reading it. More often than not, they have a query, and they use the search engine such as Google, Yahoo or Bing, to look up an answer. How well you satisfy their queries is the gauge on the quality of your website.

To write quality content, you must know your subject, and be able to understand why anybody would want to visit your website. Let me illustrate using my own website.

When I write Singapore Travel Tips, I make sure I cover it thoroughly. Not only do I explain about the places of interest in Singapore, I also describe in detail how to take the subway, called the Mass Rapid Transit. That way, people visiting Singapore have all the details they need to discover the destination on their own.

Of course it's not easy to be thorough. I wrote dozens of pages to document each and every subway station in Singapore. However, if you want your website to stand above the crowd, that is something you have to be prepared to do. When you cover a subject in greater detail than your competitor, readers will take you as the main authority in the subject. The next time they want to find out about that topic, they will return to your site.

How to write good content for your websites? In one sentence, ensure that you describe your subject in your own words, and be sure you cover the topic thoroughly.
